Reports on Research Surveys by Year

September 14-16, 2011

The 1st Survey of the Siebold Collection at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin

Conducted by National Museum of Japanese History (Miyasaka, "Alexander and Heinrich Team")

Locations surveyed: Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin, Germany)

Local contacts: Prof. Dr. Eef Overgaauw (Department Head, Manuscript Department), Ms. Ursula Flache (Administrative Coordinator)

Participants: Hiroshi Kurushima (NMJH), Toru Katsuta (NMJH), Miki Sakuraba (NMJH), Masahide Miyasaka (Nagasaki Junshin Catholic University), Yoko Matsui (Historiographical Institute, The University of Tokyo)

During the visit, the team viewed the entirety of Siebold-related materials in the library's collection and was able to develop a general understanding of the collection as a whole. Materials that could be photographed during the visit were photographed by Toru Katsuta. Miyasaka perused the journal of Siebold's visit to Edo and took working photographs of the Hortus Botanicus. By comparing the library's Siebold-related holdings with the Acta Sieboldiana III catalog, the team was able to confirm the locations of documents missing from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum list. We also confirmed the need to continue photography work into next year for materials that could not be photographed during the present visit.
