"View of Edo" (Edo zu)
pair of six-panel folding screens (17th century)

This pair of six-panel screens depicting the city of Edo (Tokyo) and its suburbs and the accomplishments of Tokugawa Iemitsu (the third shogun) provides rare historical material for the early Edo period. There are several theories regarding the date of their creation. Each screen measures 162.5 x 366.0 cm. For conservation purposes, the work is displayed only four weeks a year, from the latter half of April to mid-May. A replica is displayed during limited periods of the year.
