Study of the Siebold Family Collection and Other Materials Collected in Japan and Taken Overseas in the Nineteenth Century

Siebold Map of Japan
Akioka Takejiro Historical Maps Collection
(National Museum of Japanese History)

This project focuses on collections of Japan-related materials overseas that are known to have been collected during the 19th century. It is engaged in the long-term study of large collections that are representative of this era, as well as the development of effective methods to widely share the results of this research. Data will be generated on "historical artifacts" that are representative of the Japanese culture and history of a given era and which serve as "baseline" artifacts for the given period. How to "share" such data with the future is the question our project will engage with for a period of six years (2010-2015) as part of the NIHU's International Collaborative Research on Japan-related Documents and Artifacts Overseas.
