The 1st Japanese Art Survey in Switzerland

Conducted by National Museum of Japanese History (Okubo, "Overseas Locations Survey Team (General Survey)")

Locations surveyed: Geneva Museum of Art and History, Textilmuseum St. Gallen, Historisches und Völkerkundemuseum St.Gallen, Museum Ariana

As part of the "Hidden Overseas Treasures of Japanese Art" project headed by Hans Thomsen of the East Asian Art History Section of the University of Zurich, the team was invited to survey Japanese art-related materials in Swiss museums together with university students. The team conducted a general survey of several hundred ukiyo-e at the Geneva Museum of Art and History, several hundred textiles at the Textilmuseum St. Gallen, about 700 ceramics at the Museum Ariana, and about 50 ceramics at Historisches und Völkerkundemuseum St.Gallen.  Findings from the current survey will be used in preparations for a 2015 Japanese art exhibition to be jointly organized by the East Asian Art History Section of the University of Zurich and the Embassy of Japan.
