Reports on Research Surveys by Year

November 19-24, 2011

The 3rd Survey of the Siebold Collection at the State Museum of Ethnology in Munich

Conducted by National Museum of Japanese History (Hidaka, "Munich Team")

Locations surveyed: State Museum of Ethnology in Munich (Munich, Germany)

Local contact: Dr. Bruno Richtsfeld (curator)

Participants: Kaori Hidaka (NMJH), Toru Katsuta (NMJH), Miki Sakuraba (NMJH), Masahide Miyasaka (Nagasaki Junshin Catholic University)

During the current visit, the team surveyed about 70 items in the museum's collection that were listed under "Animals and Plants, Diverse Products" at the top of the exhibition catalog for Siebold's "Japan Museum," a portion of which the team attempted to reconstruct (Masahide Miyasaka and Miki Sakuraba). The same materials were then arranged in their order in the exhibition catalog to create a virtual exhibition, which was then photographed (Toru Katsuta). This work for the project was conducted jointly based on plans by Masahide Miyasaka as part of an ongoing survey of the Siebold Collection at the State Museum of Ethnology in Munich since 2008 (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research / Joint Research (Scientific Research B) Research Topic: Reconstruction-oriented Research on "Japan as Presented by Siebold") which was the precursor to Rekihaku's Munich survey. Continuing the team's work from last year, works of lacquer ware were surveyed (Kaori Hidaka) and photographed (Toru Katsuta), as were masks.
