The 1st Wales Survey

Conducted by National Museum of Japanese History (Okubo, "Overseas Locations Survey Team (General Survey)")

Location surveyed: National Museum of Wales

Local contact: Andrew Renton

Participants: Yoshihiro Miki

Work in Wales in the United Kingdom will begin with materials at the National Museum and be extended subsequently to other museums within Wales. The National Museum is located in the capital of Cardiff, about two hours from London by train. Materials can be broadly grouped into prints and crafts. Numerous historical buildings have been relocated to the museum's affiliated St Fagans National History Museum, which includes a small number of Japan-related materials. The survey was conducted with Mr. Renton (curator). Materials include those collected by potter Bernard Leach to use in introducing tea ceremony culture. They were collected during a stay in Japan at the request of the museum director at the time. They preserve exhibit ideas and explanatory commentaries with drawings by Bernard Leach himself.
