The How and Why of Nishiki-e Production

  This exhibition explores how nishiki-e, colorful woodblock prints, were created.  It looks at the social conditions and distribution system that made them possible, and examines their technical development through engraving and printing methods and scientific pigment analysis.
Palaces, Religious Structures, and Dwellings in East Asia --The Truth of Traditional Japanese Architecture--

  While traditional Japanese architecture arose in its unique culture, recent comparative analysis reveals its close relationship with traditional Chinese and Korean architectures.  This exhibition reexamines traditional Japanese architecture in relation with other East Asian cultures by comparing iconic buildings in chronological order.
The Beginning of the Jomon Culture --What Took Place 15,000 Years Ago?--

  Pottery in the Far East—including the Japanese archipelago—originated at the end of the last ice age.  What was the relationship between humans and nature at that time? We think about this question using potsherds and stone tools from the beginning of the Jomon Period.

  The long-awaited new “Contemporary History of Japan” gallery opens in March 2010, completing the museum's permanent exhibitions.  This new gallery will present history and culture from the 1930s to the 1970s, including the pre- and post-war periods, the defeat and occupation, and Japan’s period of rapid economic development.
