| Project Title | General Study of the 20th Century |
| Supervising Head of the Research Team | YASUDA Tsuneo |
| Purpose | When considering the characteristics of the 20th century in modern Japan, research about the relationship between war and society, for example, the problems surrounding veterans memorials, has made significant progress. This is due to the strong interest in using actual historical materials, which are naturally applicable to exhibition work in museums like NMJH, but research directly related to the study of the problems involved in war exhibitions has yet to be seen. Recently, however, after the passage of a certain period of time since the end of the war, the problems have been investigated head on with the increasing disclosure of historical documents, resulting in a subsequent increase in the number of bibliographies compliled by researchers of Japanese history using materials from foreign countries. This is due to the strong interest in actual foreign historical materials, which are naturally applicable to exhibition work in the museums like NMJH, but research directly related to the study of the problems involved in war exhibitions using foreign materials is relatively scarce. Moreover, historical analysis on the problems of how war was depicted in the society of that time, and how it came to be accepted by that society, has just begun. Furthermore, in addition to the problems relating to real historical materials, interviews focusing on war experiences also need to be undertaken urgently before time runs out. Because of this, and while taking into consideration the cooperative work in other fields such as art history, cinema and movie history, we would like investigate and clarify the aformentioned problems. |

On "Comprehensive Research on the 20th Century", aiming for a consensus on the topics and methods in the NMJH workshops, in February, 2007, we held a local research meeting in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. In this appropriately named "Military Metropolis", we were able to consider the historical nature of the military society since the "ex–legionary" period, while at the same time take a comprehensive look at the history of social movements, modernisms and and "the Ainu and war". There, we also realized that exchanges with local researchers are invaluable in obtaining new points of view concerning awareness of the War, and we were able to clarify the way forward for the cooperative research of the second term. Also, using "The Sakura Regiments and the Age of War" a special project of NMJH presented in the summer of 2006 as our material, we held a review meeting for in–depth discussions from a specialist’s point of view. This will be a precious bridge towards the "Comprehensive Exhibition Renewal, Contemporary Exhibition" which is under preparation now.
Furthermore, regarding "Material Research on the Record of War Experiences and Narrations",we had an international meeting, "Memory of War Experiences and Narrations" focusing on the research meeting at NMJH, while trying to share problems and methods, in February, 2007,. There, we carried out comparitive analysis on the symbolization of the memories of the war experiences and the transfer of the knowledge of war experiences to the next generations in Japan and in Western countries

In "Comprehensive Rthe esearch on 20th Century (1)", aiming for a consensus on subjects centered on research trends in the workshops in NMJH, we held local research meetings twice: in Hiroshima and Okinawa. Through exchanges and discussions with researchers in local areas, we had exciting meetings and obtained a new point of view on the awareness of the War.
In addition to on "Material Research on the Record of War Experiences and Narrations", confirming research trends, a cooperative researcher has collected materials from local districts around the nation, a part of which will be published.

On "Wars in the 20th Century (1)", as this year is the first year, we tried to deepen and share our knowledge through research presentations, while doing the basic work necessary to establish the current state of research in the academic world. In addition to on "Material Research on the Record of War Experiences and Narrations", confirming research trends, a cooperative researcher has collected materials from local districts around the nation, a part of which will be published.
