| Purpose | We will approach to this subject, from three view points of view: societal, symbolic and foreign (Asia and the South Pacific) in order to clarify the the characteristics of war in the 20th Century. We will determine what topics to focus on, based on the recognition of problems and trends in recent research on the modern and contemporary history of Japan, and based on the accumulation of cooperative research on modern and contemporary history done by the museum,. And we will center on the concentrated research done by a small number of expert researchers, focusing on possible practical results. At the same time, in order to make good use the special nature of universities, which allows for cooperative use, we will prioritize working on the overall arrangement and analysis of the historical materials stored in NMJH relating to the War especially, in the period of the "The 15 Year War". Finally, we want to connect these results in some form to the exhibition in the 6th room of the National Museum of Japanese History. |

Result
"Wars in the 20th Century (I)" has entered into its second year. We have tried continually to achieve a consensus, trying to deepen the discussions by setting more specific topics. We have also tried to share the targets and problems of research through doing field research. In the research in Hiroshima, we travelled to investigate military ruins and military cemeteries. In the meeting at Okinawa in February, through exchange with the researchers and journalists, etc. working on recording the war experiences in local area, we had deep fruitful discussions regarding life histories in words, images, and records, etc. We also started the work of digitizing the pictures of Saipan under the occupation of Japan, kept by the citizens of Sakura city.
