Short-Term Visiting Scholars Program Application Guideline
First Invitation Period for Year 2010 (April 2010- March 2011)

The program aims to encourage foreign scholars of Japanese History and culture to conduct research visits to NMJH. Now we are inviting applications for year 2010. *Applications are closed. For reference purpose only. |

| |
1. Purpose |
| |
| |
The National Museum of Japanese History (NMJH) has established the Short-Term Visiting Scholars Program in the pursuit of international academic exchange. The purpose of this program is to invite emerging to mid-career researchers of foreign institutions. The program offers the following opportunities: |
| |
· To promote continuous exchange in related research fields through discussions and meetings with NMJH scholars and staff;
· To develop networks between NMJH and the foreign institutions to which participants belong;
· To plant the seeds of international collaborative research.

2. Eligible Research Fields |
| |
| |
Fields related to museum science, history, archaeology or folklore. |
|
|
|
| |
3. Requirements |
| |
| |
Applicants must be employed by foreign research institutions such as universities (part-time staff are excluded), and meet one of the following requirements. |
| |
(1) Hold a doctoral degree
(2) Have expertise or research skills equivalent to those who hold a doctoral degree |
| |
*Although there is no age limitation to apply, this program is for emerging to mid-career researchers in accordance with the program purpose. |

4. Number of Position Awarded |

5. Invitation Period |
| |
| |
From 14 to 30 days between the dates April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011. |

6. Provisions |
| |
| |
NMJH will cover the following expenses: |
| |
(1) Round-trip airfare
(2) Daily allowance and accommodation fees (Based on the regulation of the National Institutes for the Humanities. The accommodation fees for domestic research trips are provided and calculated according the location.)
(3) Travel expenses for domestic research trips (For details, see item 9: Research Visits to Other Institutions in Japan.) |

7. Research Benefits |
| |
| |
Participants will have access to the collections, facilities, equipment, books and journals of NMJH with permissions. |
|
|
|
| |
8. Accommodation |
| |
| |
NMJH will provide rooms for participants at an affiliated guest house. Participants are expected to stay at this facility except for when they are on research trips to remote areas. |
|
|
|
| |
9. Research Visits to Other Institutions in Japan |
| |
| |
Participants may visit universities and libraries in Japan for research purposes when such visits are considered necessary for completing proposed research plans. There are limitations for travel expenses and the number of days permitted to research at institutions other than NMJH. |

During the invitation period, participants must not engage in activities unrelated to the program and/or sponsored by other fellowships. |

10. Application |

The application deadline is Friday, November 27, 2009. The following documents must be submitted to the International Exchange Section by research staff of NMJH: |

11. Selection Process and Announcement |
| |
| |
Applications will be examined by the selection committee at NMJH. Both applicants and host researchers of the NMJH will be notified of their application status around February 2010. |

12. Obligations |
| |
| |
· Participants from countries requiring visas are responsible for obtaining their own visas.
· Participants must conduct research activities exactly as stated in their application forms. Research plans may not be changed once the invitations are confirmed. Please consult with your host researchers if you believe changes are unavoidable.
· To demonstrate the outcome of the program, participants must submit research reports after the completion of their visits. NMJH encourages participants’ contribution to the museum’s research activities and the promotion of international academic exchange. There will be an opportunity for research presentations during the invitation period. |

13. Other Information |

The application for the second invitation period of October 1, 2010 through March 31, 2011 will be announced in April or May 2010. Please note the second invitation will not be conducted if all positions are filled by the first invitation period. |
