Visiting Scholars Program
National Museum of Japanese History Visiting Scholars Program Application Guideline Invitation Period for Year 2013 (May 2013- March 2014)

- Purpose
The National Museum of Japanese History (NMJH) conducts the Visiting Scholars Program. The purpose of this program is to invite researchers of foreign institutions studying Japanese history and culture, and interested in joining the collaborative research projects, the international collaborative research projects, the exhibition development projects, and the promotion of research in the humanities at the NMJH. The program offers the following opportunities:
・To promote innovative research on Japanese history.
・To contribute to research and activities in NMJH. - Eligible Research Fields
Fields related to museum science, history, archaeology or folklore.
- Requirements
Applicants must be employed by foreign research institutions such as universities (part-time staff are excluded), and meet one of the following requirements.
(1) Hold a doctoral degree
(2) Have expertise or research skills equivalent to those who hold a doctoral degree
*When they are appointed, their visit to the NMJH must be approved by their supervisors. - Number of Position Awarded
About 2 positions
- Invitation Period
Between three and up to six months during the period May 1, 2013- March 31, 2014
- Provisions
NMJH will cover the following expenses:
(1) salary
(2) Round-trip airfare
(3)Travel expenses for domestic research trips (up to 25,000 yen a month) - Research Benefits
Participants will have access to the collections, facilities, equipment, books and journals of NMJH with permissions.
- Accommodation
NMJH will provide rooms for participants at an affiliated guest house. Participants are expected to stay at this facility except for when they are on research trips to remote areas.

Research Visits to Other Institutions in Japan
Participants may visit universities and libraries in Japan for research purposes when such visits are considered necessary for completing proposed research plans. -

Selection Process and Announcement
Applications will be examined by the selection committee at NMJH. Both applicants and host researchers of the NMJH will be notified of their application status around February 2013. -
Obligations
*Visiting scholars at the NMJH receive monthly salaries according to the working contracts with Director-General. Regardless of their nationalities, they are required to apply visas in their own country to enter Japan with working permission.*To demonstrate the outcome of the program, participants must submit research reports after the completion of their visits. NMJH encourages participants’ contribution to the museum’s research activities and the promotion of international academic exchange. There will be an opportunity for research presentations during the invitation period.
