DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the substance making up genes, found in some viruses and all living cells; in eukaryotic organisms DNA is contained in the nucleus. It consists of four types of bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C) and thymine (T), normally arranged in a double helix structure formed by complementary bases A-T or G-C between two DNA strands. These base sequences contain genetic information such as proteins. In 1953 James D. Watson and F. H. C. Crick proposed the double helix structure as the molecular model of deoxyribonucleic acid, a hugely important development in molecular biology. |
