Outline of Exhibition

The collection of materials is one of the important activities of the National Museum of Japanese History (Rekihaku). We collect important historical materials and valuable cultural assets that inform us about Japan's history and culture for research purposes, to use and also protect them from becoming lost. A great many materials are added to our collection every year. However, it is difficult to make some of these materials accessible to the public through general exhibitions and special exhibitions which are subject to space and time constraints. Consequently, in recent years we have set up exhibitions of new acquisitions to give the public the opportunity to view recent acquisitions that have not yet, or only briefly, been on display.

In this exhibition we are displaying a collection of materials related to the art of making lacquer ware, architectural models of sacred imperial temples and shrines and items such as nishiki-e, which we collect annually on an ongoing basis. In our Mini Exhibition we are displaying some of the findings from the excavation of the Ide-Uenohara archaeological site conducted by Rekihaku. They comprise items found in a Jomon period dwelling with a "fukushiki-ro" fireplace.

We look forward to your continued cooperation and support for Rekihaku's acquisition, preservation and use of such materials.

Main Exhibits

Exhibition of New Acquisitions

1) Materials related to the art of making lacquer ware (Materials used by contemporary lacquer ware artisans)
2) Pictures of recreational hunting in the four seasons (Picture scrolls from the Late Edo period depicting hawk hunting and fishing)
3) Nishiki-e (Nishiki-e of the famous sites of Edo and nishiki-e of ghost stories and monsters)
4) Tokyo in the modern age: Kimono of women from the Yamanote area (Garments gifted by the Kurata family)
5) Funeral altars and hearses (Plain wooden altar, altar covered with white cloth, hearse)
6) Architectural models of sacred imperial temples and shrines (Drawings, etc of architecture from the Early Modern period)
7) Writings of court nobles and warriors (Materials from the Kiyohara family collection, writings of Kanenaka Kyoki, and the letter by an official of the Daimyo Satomi clan
