PERMANENT EXHIBITS ---- The permanent exhibits are designed around selected themes from the flow of Japanese history and culture that have relevance today. The emphasis is on the way people used to live.
First is a Prologue exhibit on the ocean, a symbol of geographic conditions of the Japanese islands followed by Galleries One through Three. These galleries focus on thirteen themes and three sub-themes covering the period extending from the primitive/ancient period to pre-modern times and most displays are chronologically arranged. In the ground floor Gallery 4 centers on six themes of folklife in Japan and Gallery 5 on three themes of modern times. These twenty-five themes were selected by research teams consisting of museum and outside scholars, and represent interpretations of problems under study.
The items on display were selected as representative of their respective themes and include not only authentic artifacts but dynamic use of reproductions and reconstructions. In addition to strategic placement of these objects, graphic panels, explanation sheets, and video tapes are just some of the methods used to help portraying these themes as vividly as possible.
